Garden Club Organization History
Membership
As a member of the Garden Club of Hollywood you are also a member of a much larger group dated back as far as 1891.
That’s right. The first garden club in America was founded in January 1891 by the Ladies Garden Club of Athens, Georgia. On May 1, 1929, 13 federated states became charter members.
Today the National Garden organization comprises 50 state garden clubs, and over 165,000 members. Additionally, NGC has 60 national affiliated organizations within the USA and nearly 330 international affiliated organizations. But that’s not all! We are also members of the Deep South Garden Clubs. The six member states of the NGC that comprise the D.S.G.C. are: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Check out www.dsgardenclubs.com
There is more, most of you know that we are also members of the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs. Our corporate office is located in Winter Park. Some of you came to the District meeting last October and were able to meet the F.F.G.C board. www.ffgc.org The F.F.G.C was established on April 24, 1924 and Federated on April 25, 1925. It will be our 100th birthday soon!
And then on a local level we have District XI. Our district is made up of six clubs, five circles and 410 members. Garden Club of Coral Springs, Pompano Beach Garden Club, Fort Lauderdale Garden Club, Lighthouse Point, Lauderdale by the Sea, and Hollywood. The circle clubs are part of Fort Lauderdale.
